SCIENCE IS BORING, THEY SAID

PEOPLE JUST DON’T GO AROUND PICKING UP METHANE BUBBLES AND SETTING FIRE TO THEIR HANDS WITH SPLINTS, THEY SAID.

Well this Tuesday, that’s exactly what science club did. Science club does what it says on the can, it’s a club about science. Every Tuesday, sixth former's and the lower years come together to perform fun practicals to inspire and entertain. This week, it was methane bubbles.

The method is simple. First, fill a tub with soapy water. Then, use a gas tap and tube to blow some methane bubbles. Then, scoop out as many bubbles as your dare, and set fire to it in your very hands!

The fire is so hot, burns so quickly, and rises so fast- it cannot harm you. All the heat rapidly escapes, such that the fire leaves nothing but warm water on your palms. No soot is produced either, as the excess of oxygen means complete combustion occurs; so the only products are CO2 and H2O.

I know this firehand- I mean- firsthand…

Aside from a few singed hairs on Deputy Head Boy Sam’s forearms (who is credited for the above images, which were taken over the space of one second), they were no injuries of any sort.
