On a glorious day, the annual Knights Templar Sports Day graced our celebrated field. For many, it was the climax of the school year. Sports Day at KTS is a celebration of the rich sporting history of our school. It marks the closing of a term and everyone takes part in a day full of athletics.
This year an incredible 20 school records were broken by athletes from Year 7 to 10. Kira Beck broke the Year 7 discus record.
“Bettering the school record is a weird feeling, I wasn’t expecting it,” said Kira.
There were a number of notable performances. Year 8 Leah Cairns bettered the 300m record for her year and Year 9, too. Georgian Shephard-Gazely, also in Year 8, continued her clean sweep of javelin records; she has already thrown the longest distance ever at Schools Sports Day. While Oliver Leach took the 300m boys record down to just 43.7 seconds.
Of course, winning is not everything. “I did long jump and 200m, I came third in the 200m!” said Gabriel Taylor.
“Sports Day is a great opportunity to compete against your friends under the eyes of the whole school. The best thing about Sports Day is the people taking part.”
For most students Sports Day is one of the best days of the year and this year it was no different. “It’s been really enjoyable!” remarked Ollie Browning. While Lauren Highland said: “It’s really exciting because everyone’s really competitive. It has been lots of fun.”
This Sports Day also welcomed the first ever Mixed Race where an estimated 500 students, sixth formers and teachers raced over 900m. The spectacle was something to behold.
The resulting sprint finish between Marcus Crowther and Mr Bowers was clinched by Marcus as he took the tape. “It was unlike any race I’ve ever done before,” said Mr. Bowers. “It was really nice to see so many people of all different ages take part.”
This was Mr Litchfield’s first Sports Day as Head of the school. “There was a real special feel about this Sports Day compared to other schools,” he enthused.
“I loved the open race and the fact that so many students competed. I have to compliment Mr Smith and the PE staff on a fantastic day.”
