GCSE KTS students were hugely successful at the St Christopher’s Recycled Fashion show on the 27th of February
This year’s competition was titled ‘Ideas and Inventions’, and over 60 students from six local schools brought their own interpretations of the theme to the catwalk. The show was split into age categories, ranging from lower school to A level.
Ella Hill wowed the judges with her dress, ‘The article’, modelled by Claire Barker, and won overall prize. Ella told Newsknight that "[she] was inspired by the ideo of newspaper because it's such an ordinary everyday object that we don't really think about- my aim was to make this boring material into something with a bit of meaning and shape". Her favourite part of the event was "seeing all the different stunning and and different ideas that were produced, and how different people had made use of scrap materials and turned them into some amazing pieces". Erin Davies amazed all with her unique dress, ’Balloons: Letting Go’, modelled by Tia Charlton. It took her over a month to complete and was made up of 1000 balloons, sewn and twisted together to create a delicate garment. Erin described the experience of winning as being something that she was “happy [about] because I’d put a lot of work into my piece” and that she felt “honoured” because it was “such a big night with so many people participating and amazing designs”. Her winning design was based on the idea of letting go of loved ones and the memories of them that we cherish.
Several students from KTS also had their designs chosen for the show’s exhibition, which will be taking place in the Broadway Gallery and Studio (formerly known as the Letchworth arts centre). Eve Wenham was “surprised” that her design was chosen but overall felt that “it was really exciting sharing the costumes we had been working on for so long”.
